About the project
The project started in August 2026 gathering a substantial body of buried knowledge about places and structures that currently host cultural, musical, and sound events.
For most people on the internet, and for musicians looking for modest rooms to play, these places remain visible among few communities over social networks, or exist only as flyers and posters. The same map also brings together more official alternative cultural spaces, whether publicly or privately funded.
This project receives no funding from any association or government. It is placed in public for several reasons: the coming age of censorship through social networks, and the lack of a lasting record of the rise and fall of art and cultural spaces across regions of the world. The website keeps “Permanently closed” places in order to reflect on our own history: the history of curators, artists, and listeners who once survived government pressure and the absence of support.
The project is open to the public. Anyone may suggest a place and help complete the database.
The rules are simple. Any listed place must meet the following conditions:
- The structure exists in public, through a webpage, a social network, or a community site.
- The structure reflects an open-minded community and editorial processes that host eclectic genres in any field of contemporary visions and expressions. It stands for humanist values, stays outside the scope of consumerism, respects all genders, and practices equity. It cares for its audience’s engagement, maturity, and self-reflection.
- The place has a public address. If it does not, past events must show a repeated use of spaces in the same town or region.
- The structure or host place maintains a public agenda of upcoming or past dates.
